Traffic Control Petition

Traffic is one of the most common topics council hears about.  To help me and the City of Shaker Heights better understand traffic hot spots I created this petitionin 2016. It's back this summer by popular demand.  Please "sign" with your name and address.  This will help us understand which areas are most impacted.  In 2016, the results were presented to the safety and Public Works Committee.  Police Chief DeMuth and his team reviewed the list line-by-line and made some changes.  Once again this year we will share results with the same committee and ask for feedbck from the Police Department.

Also, if you'd like, please add any comments you think will be helpful to understanding the situation in your neighborhood (for example, you may be concerned about an area other than the street you live on).  I can't promise a "silver bullet" solution but will do my best to champion the cause.  Thank you for participating! - Councilman Tres Roeder

Cars drive down Rocklyn Road at incredibly high and dangerous speeds. In addition, there are so many children living on Rocklyn, and lives are truly at risk with all the speeding cars.

Rocklyn Road is used as a cut trough street which by my observation looks to be non residents. In the past, the police department has sent out a car to run radar for a day or so and then stopped even after realizing the problem with speeding on the street.

Is it possible to add a traffic light at the intersection of Chagrin Blvd. and Lynnfield? It’s very difficult to make any kind of turn at this intersection or to cross it.

The intersection at Fernway and Lee could use a comprehensive review. When there was a stop light there years ago, cars would speed down Fernway to make the light so I don’t know that a light, at least full-time is the answer. Morning rush hour and afternoon school dismissal and rush hours are all horrible, but otherwise not as bad. The other problem is bushes in yards that need to be seen around. One must creep quite a bit over the crosswalk area to see traffic appropriately. In fact, viewing around foliage/bushes is often a problem at many intersections.

We have lived on Rocklyn for 42 years. The traffic issues have really increased. In years past we had police issuing speeding tickets, which cut down speeding for a while. The street as Beachwood cut through as well as the Laurel drop off have increased the problems. Help would be so appreciated.

The stop signs at the corners of Ashley and Brantley are almost universally ignored, especially during US drop off and pickup times, and the average speed is at least 10 over. The worst part is that our children are standing on this corner waiting for their school bus, or being dropped off by the buses at the same corner.

There is dangerously excessive speed on Rocklyn Road between Shelburne and Laureldale (typically during school drop off/pick up times and the 5 o’clock hour).

Rocklyn Road (between Shelburne & Laureldale) issues: 1) a considerably high amount of traffic volume due to drivers using as a cut-through to avoid Green Road/Fairmount traffic, 2) dangerously high speeding (on average +15-25 above the speed limit), and 3) Laurel parents/teenagers speeding to arrive at school (many of whom are looking at their phones). Rocklyn road residents and especially their children are at a severely heightened risk of danger given these conditions. We request that the city take action to minimize these risks before a catastrophe surfaces. Consider: increased police coverage, digital/flashing speed monitors, Green/Fairmount intersection traffic light and/or road widening adjustments, etc.

Agree with all of the comments about Rocklyn Road. Cut through and speeding — very dangerous.

Too many cars use our street as a cut-through, often traveling at excessive speeds.

Rocklyn between Shelburne and Laureldale is very dangerous and the city has ignored my requests for many years. One of my daughters nearly died one morning due to a car racing around while she tried to cross the street to board a school bus. Every day people speed on Rocklyn as a cut through. We should stop this before someone is injured or killed.

Speed limit on South Woodland between Warrensville Center Road and Lee Road should be 25 mph. Right now many people drive 45-55 mph and there are too many accidents at the light at Torrington. If speed limit is 25 mph people will drive 35-40. Much safer speed for a road with so many cross streets and especially since this is a walk-to-school zone for the middle school.

People routinely speed down Chadbourne and other long streets, including Warrington and Huntington. There are also many drivers who “coast” through stop signs rather than coming to a full stop.

Please include pedestrian and cyclist safety. Crossing Chagrin, Van Aken, Lee, and Shaker (Blvds and Rds) is pedestrian-unfriendly. The lights rarely respond to the buttons (where these exist), require waiting through many cycles in some places, and turn red (albeit blinking) quickly, which makes it look like the walker should yield to the driver and confuses children.

The timing of the traffic lights at Van Aken/Lynnfield or people running through red lights creates an unsafe situation. Also, the stop signs at Lomond/Traynham/Traver are regularly ignored by drivers.

We see lots of cars turning left from Lomond to Traver during prohibited hours as well as speeding. Timing on the traffic lights on Chagrin and Farmsleigh/Lomond and on Warrensville at Northfield, the post office and Norwood create gridlock.

New to Cleveland and Shaker Hts. I grew up here as a child.

The traffic “calming” at Van Aken and Chagrin seems to be OK. There are some nights that there is a lot of motorcycle noise nearby, but overall not bad.

Although not in Shaker Hts, Chagrin Blvd. near I-271 is a nightmare especially headed East. I believe this has been a long-term issue with Woodmere Village. BUT, this causes further congestion and driver frustration on Chagrin all the way to Van Aken

There has been an excessive amount of speeding down Warrington Road over the last few years. It has gotten out of hand. While it occurs throughout the day, it is worse in the evening. There are a lot of little kids on our block and cars are not even slowing down to notice where the kids are in relation to their car as thy approach.

Please remember that SPEED KILLS. I encourage you to prioritize the speeding streets if resources are limited. In particular, please help Warrington Road. Speeding is a 24/7 problem. It has two factors that contribute to speeding: 1) It is a cut-through between Shaker Blvd. and Lee Rd. and 2) it is so long (especially between Southington Rd. and Onaway Rd. where my family and I live) that drivers can easily reach high speeds and fly all the way down the street. Thank you, Tres.

I commute by bike often and find myself in unsafe situations almost daily once I reach Shaker Hts due to aggressive driving and lack of bike lanes. Drivers also seem unaware of biker’s legal rights on the streets.

    Thanks!

Cars are constantly speeding and cutting down our street to get over to warrensville. Also, speeding around curve by Sussex park on lomond could be dangerous with park right there.

Speeding-especially South Park and the larchmere, South Park, north woodland intersection-awful. Besides general speeding. need better road and light designation. South woodland and Lee-have left lane turning, right lane straight or turning right. Warrensville and south woodland the fact that the left turning light comes at the end of a green light means people are stuck behind cars going straight and can’t turn. It doesn’t make any sense

It would greatly alleviate traffic congestion if left turn lanes and left turn lights were put in on Green Rd at the S Woodland intersection. This intersection has been a problem for years. Cars back up for more than a city block at times. It’s dangerous as cars are forced to pass left turning cars on the right. There is plenty of room to widen Green Rd at this intersection to add a left turn lane and left turn light on both the north- and south-bound lanes. Residents have been asking for years for this intersection to be made safer and more efficient.

The Moreland Community Association has spoken many times about how many people speed through the community. The solution has usually been one of those speed monitors, but it’s only in place for a short time to confirm our assertions. Our reply to this is that it truly makes sense that if people see a speed monitor, they are going to slow down. This is not an effective way to validate the complaints. The police should visit neighbors, sit on their porches with the cars out of sight and take notes. We need more traffic calming elements in place to provide long term solutions within our interior streets.
