Traffic Control Petition

Traffic is one of the most common topics council hears about.  To help me and the City of Shaker Heights better understand traffic hot spots I created this petitionin 2016. It's back this summer by popular demand.  Please "sign" with your name and address.  This will help us understand which areas are most impacted.  In 2016, the results were presented to the safety and Public Works Committee.  Police Chief DeMuth and his team reviewed the list line-by-line and made some changes.  Once again this year we will share results with the same committee and ask for feedbck from the Police Department.

Also, if you'd like, please add any comments you think will be helpful to understanding the situation in your neighborhood (for example, you may be concerned about an area other than the street you live on).  I can't promise a "silver bullet" solution but will do my best to champion the cause.  Thank you for participating! - Councilman Tres Roeder

There’s speeding on every street! If people knew that the police were patrolling for speeders on more than just the main roads, i.e. Van Aken, Lee Road, Scottsdale, Warrensville Center Road, then maybe they’d be deterred from speeding. I don’t see a police presence on my street, Riedham, and that’s after two children in 12 months were hit by cars.

Kenmore road is a huge cut through street. Would love if it were set up like on Avalon but one on each end!!

Sulgrave Rd between Fairmount and Shaker West. Cars fly over 40 MPH.

The trouble is … Beachwood states it is a Shaker issue and Shaker states it’s a Beachwood issue. In the mean time, after years of complaining and offering solutions, no one wants to take responsibility.

Cars drive much too quickly on residential South Woodland. Our children are crossing the street and biking along the road. It is extremely dangerous.

Speeding on Fernway between Parkland and Fernway school is constant. I’ve tried and tried to get a stop sign added at Kenmore or Grenway. Please help.

Speeding on the Fernway neighborhood streets particularly during commuting hours. Excessive vehicle speed on Shaker and Van Aken Boulevards.

Total disregard of Shaker ordinances regarding mobile phone use by drivers while driving.

Reckless driving through traffic light intersections as lights change from yellow to red.

Lack of courtesy and deference shown to pedestrians and bicyclists by drivers particularly at crosswalks and intersections.

The “cut through” issue needs addressing across the city. We live on somerset and get a lot of cut throughs. The funny thing is the main streets are faster, but people don’t seem to realize this. Lots of speeding and stop signs being run by me and I’m sure the other cut throughs have same issue.

The speeding on Winslow Rd is out of control! There are many families on this street as well as my 2.5 year old son. Something absolutely needs to be done to protect our residents!

Lomond Blvd. speeding is out of control. No only for pedestrians, the children running around the neighborhood or pets on their daily walks. I’ve witnessed too many close calls to individuals running stop signs and either oncoming traffic or a child in harms way. Speed bumps may help reduce speed, but I’m not sure what it’s going to take get people go slow down or pay attention to the road and not their cell phones..

There are often cars speeding down Lomond Blvd way faster than 25 mph near Gridley triangle, a kid hangout.

Our “cut through” streets like Winslow, Lomond, Eaton, etc. would benefit from large speed bumps to calm the speeding. The signs help, this would too. There are a couple streets in Cleveland Heights that have them.

Sometimes it seems as if Chagrin is a speedway, particularly at times of commuter traffic. People passing through talk on cell phones, and use turning lanes to pass others who are in the correct lane. Loud music booms from passing cars. Friday and Saturday nights are pretty bad too.

Red light jumpers! Ugh so sick of red light jumpers. Chagrin bvld between Warrensvile & Lee. We have all gone through as it turned red but I saw two cars & a BUS go through way after it had turned red. Even on a green light I am looking out for these idiots just to protect my family.

On a daily basis I witness cars speeding down lomond and running stop signs to avoid traffic on Chagrin (between Lee/Warrensville). The speed limit on Chagrin is 35, but traffic rarely moves over 30. I’m always on edge walking my baby down my quiet residential street. Can we get some “Drive like your kids live here” signs?

It’s seems to me there are a lot of traffic calming measures in place throughout the community, from neighborhood design to roadway narrowing, to access limitations at rush hour. I’d suggest finding out which ones are most effective. I’d also suggest this conversation be integrated with bicycle access plans already underway, and that special attention be given to insure all neighborhoods are a part of the dialogue (though knowing you, Tres, I’m sure that’s already in the plan).

My youngest son, now 46 years old, when he was in Shaker Heights schools, told me that people select Chadbourne Road for the thrill of driving too fast because it is the longest available straight segment of a road without stoplights. We should have speed breakers built into the road.

Our street has many speeders. It was the first thing we noticed after our great neighbors. I would very much like to work with the city and our neighbors on some traffic calming measures. I have done a bit a research on best practices.

I wish that there would be police catching the rush hour cut through traffic on Huntington (from coventry to S. Woodland) at least sometime, 1 month, every other month. . . sometime.

The intersection at Chadbourne and Southington is particularly bad. Cars typically roll through the stop sign and sometimes don’t stop at all. I’ve even seen school buses do it. Because Chadbourne is a perceived cut-through that saves time to avoid Van Aken and South Woodland, the speeding is significant. Chadbourne, Weymouth and Coventry around Plymouth Church is also a cut through, so speeding and rolling through stop signs there is also prevalent.
